Bakery Shop – Deux Gars Dans l’Pétrin

A few months ago, a friend of mine while in Europe sent me a picture and asked me if I had ever seen a line at a bakery shop? Of course I had, and I can even name three bakeries in Quebec where people line up to get delicious breads, danishes, pastries or other products.

Let me introduce you to one of them, Deux Gars Dans l’Pétrin (link is in French only), an excellent artisan bakery located in the heart of Saint-Jerome since 2014. Its owner, Lionel and his team prepare on a daily basis breads and pastries inspired by French tradition. Line and the customer service team greet customers with a smile as of 7 am.

It is a good idea to arrive early in the morning to have a nice selection of their products to choose from. You will find, among other things, breads made with chocolate, grapes, nuts, sourdough, wheat and other flours, Belgian breads as well as baguettes. Some breads can be sliced on request. In addition, depending on the days and seasons, there are also specialty breads such as the olive fougasse on Friday or the sausage and cheese baguette on Saturday. You can also select from a mouth watering variety of pastries, croissants and chocolatines with or without almonds, cinnamon or jam danishes, fruit or chocolate muffins or according to the inspiration of the moment to name just a few of the delicious danishes available.

The pastry display makes you want to try everything, eclairs, fruit or chocolate tartlets, colourful mousses or made with cheese, cremes brûlées and more… You can also select a cake for a birthday or a special occasion. My favorite is the Opera cake. For the Holiday Season, I opted for the chocolate Christmas log and a Christmas Stollen made with candied fruit and marzipan.

There is also a counter for those who would like to have a bite to eat on site or to order a takeout. You can choose from a selection of sandwiches, or buy a piece of cheese, some cured or dry sausage and a baguette to make a very tasty picnic. It is a good idea to bring your own knife and plates in your bag if you want to enjoy your lunch in the park or by the river. Try one of their coffee or order a refreshing drink to go with it.

Don’t forget to have a look at the array of local products from here and elsewhere: chocolates, jams, honey, oils and vinegar, French sweets or biscuits, tea, coffee and seasonal products like the panettone for the Holiday Season.

Nathalie, it’s a good thing I don’t live there because I would weigh 100lbs more than I already weigh with all those delicious treats! I wish we had bakeries like these here! Someone once told me that if I go to Quebec there is a certain pastry I must try, but I don’t remember the name of it. I believe they said there is a bakery with the same name as the pastry?

We are very fortunate to have great craftsmanship in many small businesses. As for the pastry you are referring to, nothing comes to mind at the moment. For sweets, our go to product is maple syrup. For a meal one of our specialty is the poutine made with fries, cheese curds and gravy. You also have some variations with green peas, chicken or spaghetti sauce. We also have local specialties like the meat pie from Lac St-Jean, the lobster guedille, it is a toasted hot dog bread stuffed with a lobster salad and lettuce. You will love it when you will be here!

The Lobster Guedille sounds very similar to the Lobster Rolls we had in Massachusetts and Maine several years ago. I love them and Chris is making me that for New Years Eve dinner! I think the pastry had maple syrup in it? It was a couple years ago that someone mentioned it to me, maybe I will remember what it was. I also like Poutine, Chris is not a fan!
